I-205 Paving & Auxiliary Lanes

Johnson Creek Boulevard to the Glenn Jackson Bridge

Project Details


This project repaves approximately nine miles of Interstate 205 in both directions between Johnson Creek Boulevard and the Glenn Jackson Bridge, including many exit and entrance ramps. The surface is deteriorating and in need of repair. This section of freeway was last paved in 2004.

Paving will take place mostly at night, with lane closures on I-205. Multiple overnight closures will take place on several I-205 on-ramps and off-ramps in the project area. Cross-streets near on-ramps and off-ramps will also close.

Auxiliary lanes

Auxiliary lanes improve safety and reduce congestion in bottleneck areas. These “entrance-to-exit” lanes will improve safety at these locations:

  •     I-205 southbound from Interstate 84 eastbound to the southbound Division/Powell on-ramp.
  •     I-205 northbound from Powell Boulevard to I-84 westbound.
  •     I-205 northbound from I-84 eastbound to the Killingsworth Street exit.

This work is schedule to take place during the day and at night, requiring lane and shoulder closures.

Sidewalk curb ramp improvements

Many intersections near I-205 on-ramps and off-ramps will receive improvements to make them ADA-compliant.

Traveler information and advisory signs

New electronic signs, called ODOT RealTime signs, help drivers make more informed travel decisions with information about traffic flow and roadway conditions.

Southbound auxiliary lane

I-84 Eastbound to Division Street/Powell Boulevard

Approximately 25 percent of I-205 southbound traffic coming from I-84 eastbound is bound for the Division/Powell exit. The new auxiliary lane will provide a connection from this interchange to the Washington Street entrance and connect with the existing auxiliary lane that continues to the Division/Powell exit. The auxiliary lane will require less weaving and merging, reducing congestion in all lanes.

Northbound auxiliary lane

Powell Boulevard to I-84 Westbound

High traffic volumes and short merging distances in this area currently cause speeds to drop to 10 — 15 miles per hour during peak travel times. I-205 experiences many high-crash sites in this area. This entrance to exit lane will provide a safer connection for I-205 traffic bound for Stark Street/Washington Street, Glisan Street, and I-84 westbound.

Northbound auxiliary lane

I-84 Eastbound to Killingsworth Street

High traffic volumes and short merging distances on I-205 currently cause speeds to drop below five miles per hour during peak travel times. This auxiliary lane will address multiple bottlenecks and improve traffic flow along the northern portion of I-205. The auxiliary lane provides more room for vehicles to merge and provides a connection for I-84 and I-205 traffic bound to Sandy Boulevard or Killingsworth Street. This will improve safety and operations for freight movement.
